These gigantic shafts of polished granite were often capped with gold.
The obelisk, a monolithic stone, is four-sided piece of stone, placed upright and ending with a
pointed top, a small pyramid known as a pyramidion. Obelisks were symbols of the solar god Ra
in ancient Egypt.
What was the true reason for building obelisks?
It seems this reason has always been rather obscure.
Until today it is not clear how these gigantic structures were quarried, transported and
later raised.
So we can say the obelisks are surrounded by... mystery because no Egyptologist did propose a
satisfactory explanation of their existence in Egypt... (article with images)

Just a short comment inspired by Angus Sutherland's article (Unknown History of Obelisks). I'm familiar with the stories
about the ben-ben stones but this article inspired an idea I'd not had before. Not an entirely original idea now that I
think about it. Even the writers of the original "Stargate" movie had a similar idea. But basically it occurs to me that
the plateau (or platform) at the top of the Great Pyramid may have been a landing platform for an ET vehicle and the craft
was in the shape of a pyramidion. The ben-ben stones could be representations of the ET vehicle.
